Chapter 19, Commander Edmund Wybergh Thruston
For the full story of this pictured incident, turn to Chapter 19.
Commander Edmund Wybergh Thruston, a fourth great-grandson of Admiral Nicholas Haddock, had a jaunty personality and often entertained his fellow sailors with musical comedies. He was lent by the Royal Navy to the Royal Australian Navy and served as an intelligence officer aboard the HMAS Sydney II (pictured). While aboard the cruiser, Thruston took part in fights with Italian ships and planes. In a shocking incident in Australian naval history, the Sydney was later attacked in the Indian Ocean.
