Holmes's Bonfire 1666 in Chapter 6

During the Second Anglo-Dutch War, the English carried out a highly successful August 1666 seaborne raid on the Dutch islands of Vlieland and Terschelling, where valuable storehouses were located. Then-Captain (later Admiral Sir) Richard Haddock (c.1619–1715) was chosen to command one of several companies of 100 men assigned to secure and loot the islands. Haddock may have been selected because he was skilled at fighting as well as managing boats and underpaid men, who took booty in the raid.
